Schools
Caerleon Comprehensive School’s catchment area will include Christchurch
area from September 2007. Christchurch children already attend Infant
and Junior schools in Caerleon and will now be able to move onto Caerleon
Comprehensive School with their friends and siblings, where they will
be warmly welcomed.
Also many congratulations to Caerleon Comprehensive School music staff
and pupils for the recent outstanding performances at the National Festival
of Music for Youth. It has been noted as the school in Wales with the
greatest number of music students achieving national honours in music
ensembles, with the number of students at this level exceeding those
of many LEAs as a whole!
Caerleon Endowed Junior School - many congratulations to Mr Nick Vittle,
Head Teacher, Canon Edwards, Chair of Governors, all staff and pupils
on the excellent results from the recent Estyn Inspection. At level
4+, the school far exceeded the Wales and Newport percentage of achievement
in English (99%), Maths (100%) and Science (100%) and was highly praised
by Inspectors not only for the academic success of the school but also
its spiritual and social ethos. There have also been sporting successes
with both the girls and boys returning victorious from the Newport Schools’
Athletics Championships. All these achievements were certainly clear
to see at the end of year prize giving day. The Year 6 pupils are well
prepared for their move to Secondary schools where we wish them every
success.
Caerleon
In Bloom
The success of Caerleon in
Bloom has resulted in a meeting with CADW and Caerleon Roman Legionary
Museum, who have shown an interest in becoming involved. This is very
warmly welcomed and will be a great addition to our already impressive
displays. Many thanks to all involved with pots and plants, including
the Home for Autistic Adults who have also joined in this year, looking
after tubs in High Street. Caerleon in Bloom is an excellent example
of the community spirit that runs deep through Caerleon.
Caerleon Basque Child Refugees 1937- 1945
Caerleon’s community spirit has always run deep and no more so
than in 1937 when 56 Basque child refugees, who had been evacuated from
Spain after the bombing of Guernica by Franco’s Fascists, found
themselves on the steps of Cambria House, Mill Street. The kindness
and support from Caerleon people, and Mrs Fernandez, the Home’s
warden, has never been forgotten by the children. Two of those children
attended the recent unveiling of a plaque and exhibition, at Big Pit,
to the men and women of the International Brigade who fought to save
Spain and the world from the Fascist coup 70 years ago. Many people
travelled from around the world to pay their respects to the brigaders’
heroism in what was a very moving ceremony which held so many sad and
difficult memories for so many.
Christchurch
Bus Service - This very important service is to return to one hourly
from 7 August 2006 for a trial period of 6 months, with a view to continuing
it if the passengers numbers are sufficient.
Caerleon in Bloom – it is hoped to restart the Christchurch in
Bloom competition in 2007. If you would like any further information
or would like to help in any way Cllr Cliff Suller, Chair ( 01633 221922),
or Anne Parker, Secretary ( 01633 422693) will be very pleased to receive
your call.
Allotments
Caerleon Allotment Society held a very successful and well attended
Annual Barbeque again this year. Caerleon Allotments, sited near the
Bowls Pavilion off Coldbath Road, are one of the most successful in
Newport and now have a waiting list. Everyone is welcome and those with
allotments range from young people, people with young children through
to senior citizens who all work together sharing their knowledge and
often the fruits of their labours!
UWN,
