and 6pm. All are very welcome.
Caerleon’s Young People
The new school year is underway with all our children who are starting
or returning to their schools beginning to settle into school life.
AGMs and meetings are already taking place with Governors and staff
working to ensure this school year provides the very best for all our
young people .
We are exceptionally lucky in Caerleon, and Newport, with all our schools
providing first class education, support and a large variety of opportunities
and experiences for pupils.
Caerleon Youth Clubs, based in the Caerleon Town Hall and University’s
Caerleon campus, are also well supported and successful in providing
activities for many of our youth including the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
Young people from both the Caerleon Comprehensive School and Youth Clubs
will be presented with there awards this month at the Riverfront Theatre.
It takes great commitment to achieve these awards so many congratulations
to everyone.

University of Newport, Caerleon Campus
The University’s city centre development is well underway and
many of you will have seen the almost completed student accommodation
block alongside George Street Bridge, which will joined by the new campus
building situated further along the river bank.
The University has kindly agreed to provide the Boardroom, Caerleon
Campus for a future Neighbourhood Committee meeting, which will include
a presentation on the University’s city centre development.
Caerleon Campus has also provided accommodation for Georgian fireman
this month, visiting from their war torn country in order to gain vital
specialist training. The visit was arranged and hosted by the Newport
Kutaisi Association and Cllr Noel Trigg, Mayor of Newport, has kindly
launched the following appeal for humanitarian help:
Action
for Kutaisi
The recent tragic events in Georgia caused a huge flow of population
from the Khadori Gorge in Abkhazia and the bombed town of Gori to find
shelter in Kutaisi. The appearance of many internally displaced people
without adequate shelter and any means for living is stretching what
few resources our twinned city of Kutaisi has.
The Mayor of Newport Cllr. Noel Trigg & members of the Newport Kutaisi
Association heard Koba Lomidze speak movingly of his experience of visiting
the makeshift camp that has been set up in Kutaisi. Before he left,
the following day, to travel to Newport in his role of interpreter to
the delegation of Kutaisi fire fighters, he saw at first hand, the conditions
in the camp.
He told of the deprivation, of the lack of basic hygiene materials,
simple equipment to set up even the modest of homes. Mothers and children
with only the clothes they had on. Winter will soon be setting in and
with Georgia facing an uncertain future the people have little hope
of returning to their bomb damaged homes. At this stage the chances
seem remote
On Friday the Mayor and NKA members launched an appeal for aid to help
to alleviate the distress of all these people and to demonstrate to
the Mayor of Kutaisi that Newport, as it’s twinned city have not
been forgotten by us.
The appeal ACTION FOR KUTAISI has been set up.
We invite you to support the call for humanitarian help with financial
donations to the Mayor’s Office, Civic Centre, Newport in envelopes
marked ACTION FOR KUTAISI.
Cheques made payable to ACTION FOR KUTAISI

Christian Aid coffee mornings are held on the third Saturday every month
St Cadoc’s Church room. It’s a great way to meet people,
have a coffee and a chat. Look out for notices on local notice boards.
Newport Women’s Aid
Newport Women’s Aid ( NWA), this year alone, has provided safe
refuge for over 100 women and children who experienced domestic abuse.
Women are given, care, support and advise to help them escape from very
difficult and sometimes life threatening situations.
Many
completely change their lives, and those of their children, through
finding new accommodation, jobs and/or education. Each year at its AGM,
one of these remarkable women speaks about her experiences and how she
has survived and it is always very moving to hear what they have had
to endure and then overcome. This year’s meeting also heard a
presentation from Shaheen Munsif, Education and Raising Awareness Manager,
Bawso, on how domestic abuse affects women from ethnic minorities, some
of whom have to suffer forced marriages and even the threat of honour
killings.
The AGM, opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Newport, Cllr and Mrs Noel
Trigg and chaired by Sue Collingbourne, had a packed audience including
NCC Councillors and representatives from many community associations.
Rosemary Butler AM and Jessica Morden MP, spoke about the vital work
being done by NWA and congratulated the committee, volunteers, staff
and clients on their continued success.
If you would like to volunteer or need help NWA can be contacted confidentially
on: 01633 840258 or email: nptwomensaid@tiscali.co.uk
