Newport City Council
Labour Group

A Message from Bob Bright
Leader of the Majority Party.

You may be surprised that after so many years of continuous progress under Labour that Newport City is being run by the Tories. Especially when you know that we are the largest Party with 22 seats whilst the Tories have only 17. You may be even more surprised to learn that they are being propped by the Lib Dems who won only 9 seats in the Local Elections. The hapless Tories and Lib Dems failed miserably to gain any serious advantage in the City despite Labour being at its lowest point for 80 years

Surprise!
Surprise however may turn to astonishment when you discover that it is the the Lib Dems who are actually running Newport despite having so few councillors.

Not perhaps as stunned as the Majority Labour Group who were not even consulted before the Lib Dems formed a very uneasy and politically disparate alliance with their arch enemies.

The Tories were so desperate for power after such a long time in the political wilderness that they would have formed an alliance with the Monster Raving Loony Party. Perhaps they have?

Labour 22, Tories 17, Lib Dems 9
What will shock the majority of Newport voters is that by casting a protest vote with a third party they have actually elected the Tories. We have not found many residents in Newport who put the Conservatives at the top of the voting list on May 1st or June 5th. Many who wanted to send a mesage to Gordon Brown did not realise they were voting Tory. Newport is only just coming out of the recession caused by Thatcher's closure of the Iron and Steel industries in South Wales. Our bold economic development policies have helped to soften the blow, but the knock on effect of the decimation of Llanwern Steelworks was not felt by smaller engineering companies until much later. The destruction of the Welsh Coal Industry and and the Docks have had an equally catastrophic effect. And don't forget that is was Thatcher's privatisation of Gas, Electricity and Water that is now affecting everyone in the UK.

Let's kick the Tories and the Liberals out of the City
Newport Labour Party is determined to restore the balance of power in the city and the campaign has already started to rectify this unjust situation and kick the Tories and Liberals out of the City at the next elections.
