Newport City Council
Labour Group News

At the local elections we were proud to tell our residents what we have achieved in the City.

Although the majority of voters gave us a vote of confidence in May, many used this opportunity to send a message to the National Government with disastrous results for our local democracy.

We are still the largest party but the two minority parties have formed an uneasy coalition. Lets hope it falls apart before they can undo all our good work!

Here is a reminder of our achievments.

• Newport is the greenest and most environmentally friendly City in the UK.

• We are one of the fastest growing Cities in the UK with a massive £2billion of investment.

• Newport has the Second Lowest Council Tax in Wales thanks to our efficient management of services as recently praised by the independent Wales Audit Office

•A £220 million city centre regeneration scheme is well under way.

• Over 6000 jobs have been created since 2003 with a further 5000 in the pipeline.

• A recent Estyn Inspection (April 2008) revealed that we are the Best Education Authority in the whole of Wales.

• Construction of a new University building in the City Centre has already started.

• Our road investment and improvement programme is considerably better than CardIff or Swansea.
